Land economic survey reports, 1922-1931.

The Michigan Land Economic Survey was established in 1922 as a means of finding constructive uses for the abandoned land in the northern part of the state. Toward this end, a number of detailed surveys were conducted in the problem counties whereby certain resources were evaluated for their economic potential. The technicians assigned these tasks prepared reports describing their findings, and these observations constitute the papers in this collection. The materials dealing with geology consider surface and hardrock formations, along with gravel, marl, and peat deposits. Soil reports discuss the location, extent, and character of different soils in a study area. The water analyses concern themselves with such matters as the characteristics of river flow, watersheds, stream profiles, and water power sites.

The Michigan Geological Survey was created by Public Act 20 of 1837. Its purpose was to conduct a geological and mineralogical survey of the state. The state legislature appointed Douglass Houghton the first state geologist (1837). In 1921, the state legislature established the Department of Conservation, and the Michigan Geological Survey became part of that department (Public Act 17 of 1921).
